Brazil’s renewable power share fell but still leads this five-country group

World Bank endpoints separate the level of renewable electricity from the direction in which each country’s share changed.

Brazil’s electricity mix stands apart within this five-country comparison. In the World Bank’s latest observation, renewables account for more than three quarters of electricity generation, leaving Brazil well above Germany, China, the United States and India. From inside Brazil, that means the central question is not whether renewable electricity has a meaningful place in the system; it already dominates the measured mix. Yet the long-run endpoints add tension: Brazil’s share was lower in 2021 than in 1990, even though it remained the highest among these countries. The headline position and the direction of change therefore tell different stories.

Level and direction are different measures

The comparison is clearest when each country’s first and latest observations are held together. Look for the large separation between Brazil and the rest at both endpoints, then compare changes between 1990 and 2021. Germany posts the largest endpoint increase in this group, moving from a small renewable share to a much larger one. China and the United States also finish above where they began. India and Brazil finish below their starting shares, though Brazil still leads the selected countries at the latest endpoint. These are changes in renewable electricity’s share, not proof that the absolute amount of renewable generation rose or fell.

That distinction matters because a percentage describes composition. It can change when renewable generation changes, when nonrenewable generation changes, or when both move. The indicator therefore answers a focused question: how much of each country’s generated electricity came from renewable sources. It does not identify the technologies involved or explain why the share changed. Read that way, the endpoints resist a simple league-table verdict. Brazil combines the group’s highest latest share with an endpoint decline. Germany combines a lower latest level with the group’s biggest endpoint gain. China and the United States also gain, while India joins Brazil in ending lower. The data end in 2021, so they provide historical context rather than a current grid reading.
