Brazil has the highest renewable power share in a five-country snapshot

Renewable electricity is not one contest with one starting line. The World Bank measure asks what share of each country’s electricity output comes from renewable sources. At the latest common observation, Brazil stands far above the other four countries in this comparison, Germany is next, China occupies the middle, and the United States and India sit lower and close together. That ordering is a snapshot, not a verdict on ambition, capacity or access.

From Brazil’s vantage, the latest figure says renewable sources supplied a large majority of electricity output. Its opening observation was higher still, so the endpoint comparison is a decline even though the latest share is the highest among these five countries. That combination matters: a country can finish with the leading level while also ending below where it began. The indicator alone does not identify which technologies, policies or demand changes produced the difference.

Level and change tell different stories

Now compare only the opening and latest ends of the lines. Germany has the largest positive endpoint change in the group, moving from a very small share to a large minority. China and the United States also finish above their opening observations. India and Brazil finish below theirs. Look especially at the reversal in relative position between Germany and India: India starts well above Germany, but Germany ends well above India. The comparison here is confined to those two observed ends.

Read together, the endpoints separate level from change. Germany shows the biggest rise among the five without reaching Brazil’s latest level. Brazil has the highest latest level despite a lower endpoint than at the opening. China and the United States end higher; India ends lower. These are different national positions, not stages on a single ladder. For policymakers and households inside each system, the relevant question is not merely rank, but what share of domestic electricity output is renewable and how that endpoint compares with the country’s own starting point.
