India is above China at the latest population endpoint

The latest World Bank population observation places India above China, while the United States and Nigeria are smaller than either in this four-country comparison. From inside India, that endpoint describes the scale at which people live, work and form households; it does not by itself assign a benefit or a burden. The comparison is bounded to the countries shown: within this set, India holds the top position at the latest endpoint.

The endpoints change order

The useful long view here is deliberately narrow: compare the first and latest observations, not the route between them. At the first endpoint, China was larger than India, and the United States was larger than Nigeria. At the latest endpoint, India is larger than China, while the United States remains larger than Nigeria. In the chart, look at the ordering on the far left and far right; the intervening line is context, not evidence for a dated crossover claim.

Size and annual growth are different measures

Population growth gives a second endpoint comparison, but it should not be treated as a forecast. At the earliest available growth observation, India’s rate was above Nigeria’s and the United States’, while China’s was below zero. At the latest observation, Nigeria has the highest positive rate among the four, followed by India and the United States, while China is again below zero. Look at the two ends of the next chart: they establish different orderings without establishing when any change occurred.

China is larger at the first population endpoint and India at the latest; those endpoints alone do not date the handover.

Read together, the measures separate population size from current annual change. India has the largest latest population in this group, but Nigeria has the highest latest growth rate. China’s latest total is just below India’s, even though its latest growth rate is negative. The United States sits below both Asian totals and above Nigeria’s total at the latest endpoint. These national figures do not describe age structure, regional distribution, migration, public services or household conditions, and they do not establish causes.
