India’s latest population estimate exceeds China’s

The World Bank’s latest population estimate puts India above China among the countries compared here. Viewed from India, the central fact is domestic before it is comparative: the estimate describes the scale of the country’s population, not a verdict on its prospects. India’s count rose from 436 million in 1960 to 1.46 billion in 2025. China’s corresponding observations are 667 million and 1.41 billion, leaving India higher at the latest endpoint.
