The population handover

India tops China in the latest population snapshot

A headline total establishes today’s ordering, while the World Bank’s earliest and latest observations show sharply different demographic endpoints.

A clear latest ranking

The World Bank’s latest population totals place India above China among the four countries shown here. That comparison is a snapshot, not evidence of when their ordering changed. India’s latest total is also far above those of the United States and Nigeria. A single large figure anchors the scale of India’s position, while the other blocks keep the comparison tied to the first and latest observations available for each country.

For the total-population comparison, look only at the opening and latest endpoints. India begins below China and ends above it; the available endpoints do not establish the date of any crossover. Every country shown has a larger latest total than its first total. Nigeria’s latest total remains below that of the United States, although its gain relative to its own starting level is greater. The chart supplies context without assigning a shape to the intervening decades.

The latest ranking is clear; the endpoints do not tell us when it changed.

From inside India, the latest figure describes the scale at which daily life and public choices unfold. It is a count of people living in the country, not merely a place in an international ranking. Read beside India’s first observation, it also shows how much larger the national population is now than at the start of the series. The indicator alone says nothing about age, location or living conditions, so those questions should not be inferred from the total.

The growth-rate endpoints add a separate, limited comparison. Look at each country’s first and latest marks rather than assuming what happened between them. India’s latest rate is positive and lower than its first rate. China’s first available rate and its latest rate are both negative, so these endpoints cannot support a claim that the series newly crossed below zero. The United States is positive at the latest observation and lower than at its first. Nigeria posts the highest latest growth rate among the four; its first and latest values are the same.
